Double Edge Theatre

Double Edge Theatre (DE), founded by Stacy Klein in 1982 in Boston, is a cultural cooperative and ensemble collective based, since 1994, on a 100-acre farm in Ashfield, MA. A center for Art, Living Culture, and Art Justice, DE blends creativity, environmental awareness, and immersive performance. Its 11-member Ensemble, with decades of collective experience, guides its artistic and operational vision.

DE is known for its visually poetic, physically rigorous productions, which are performed locally and internationally, and for its unique psycho-physical training methodology developed over 43 years. DE offers training programs, residencies, and retreats for artists. Sustainability is integral to DE’s mission, with initiatives in farming, food production, and renewable energy. Deeply woven into the local economy and community life, DE is Ashfield’s largest employer, attracting thousands of visitors annually and collaborating with town governance on housing, resilience, and revitalization projects. DE’s cooperative partnerships with organizations like Ohketeau Cultural Center and The Theater Offensive support land access, restorative justice, and social cohesion.

More than a theatre, DE is a dynamic commons model which offers a vibrant sanctuary for creativity and community-building in response to the challenges of extractive capitalism.
