From the Katrina 20 People’s Movement Assembly

Project South, the Atlanta-based institute that advances community and movement organizing in the U.S. South, has published their Katrina 20 People’s Movement Assembly report, which synthesizes eight months of engagement with “hundreds of frontline organizers, community leaders, artists, educators, and movement elders across the Gulf South and beyond” into a vision for a new movement infrastructure to replace the collapsing legacy systems that have failed our communities.
The report’s goals are:
To remember and reckon with the legacy of Katrina as a social movement turning point—not just a disaster, but a catalyst that revealed the failures of the state and the possibilities of grassroots resistance. To affirm shared principles and practices that can guide our movements through the deepening ecological, economic, and political crises we face today.
To offer strategy for building movement infrastructure rooted in collective governance, healing, care, and power from below.
