Collective Action

Movements are a collective process. The Department of Racial Justice and Movement Building (DRJaM) works from the Building Movement Project’s five stages of movement building — making the invisible visible, relationship building, infrastructure, catalyst, and sustained action — by engaging artists, cultural workers, arts administrators, and funders in the work of movement building.

Since its inception in 2023, DRJaM has engaged in strategic partnership with both the art and culture sector and movement organizations that share similar values and missions.

Through NPN, DRJaM hosted the first Intermediary Strategy Summit in 2023, a gathering of membership and regranting organizations committed to uplifting our collective role in social justice work, as well as the politicization and mobilization of each organization’s constituents. The gathering has led to the Intermediary Manifesto, and NPN/DRJaM continues to be an anchor organization for the monthly meetings.

In 2025, we held the first Cultural Movement Assembly. Building on the history of People’s Movement Assemblies, this three-day event created seven areas (Google Slides) upon which participants can develop strategies for collective action.
