Media Slam

The Media Slam is scheduled on Tuesday November 18 at 10:30am.

Media Slam 2013

INTENT: To expose local and regional performing/visual artists from NPN, VAN & International Program Partners’ communities to NPN/VAN Partners, Artists, and Colleagues. This year’s Media Slam will include NPN Partners from the Midwest and Northeast Regions. All VAN Partners are eligible.

PRESENTATION FORMAT: The Media Slam will be about 1 hour and 30 minutes. A total of 15 Partners from both regions will be eligible to present media on a first come, first served basis. Due to the limited number of slots, NPN encourages cities with multiple NPN/VAN Partners and regions to collaborate on their presentation.

PRESENTATION LENGTH: Each NPN/VAN Partner will have a maximum of 4 minutes to present one or more artist(s), companies, or collectives. The 4 minutes includes talking time, so please factor this into your presentation and limit your clip, or plan to talk while your clip is rolling. We will be strict about the 4 minute limit.

TO BE CONSIDERED:

  • REGISTRATION: All media must be REGISTERED HERE by Monday September 15.
  • RECEIPT: All media must be received by Wednesday October 1.
  • Media received after this date will not be considered.

GUIDELINES:

  • NPN/VAN Partners may not present media of themselves
  • Media presentation cannot be any longer than 4 minutes

RECOMMENDATIONS: Keep in mind that the viewing audience will primarily consist of NPN/VAN Partners, Artists and Colleagues.
Consider the following questions as you select your media:

  • Is the company too large for the target audience to present?
  • Is the artist, company, or collective at a career stage and is their work on scale that seems appropriate for the audiences and facilities of the Partners?
  • Is the artist, company, collective an appropriate fit for the NPN/VAN residency model and fee structure?
  • How strong is the work sample?  Bad media does not do an artist justice!  Check the lighting, sound, and image quality before media is submitted.

MEDIA SLAM GUIDE: A guide will be available for download and will include contact information, descriptions, and details of all the work being shown.

HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR MEDIA
1) Register Each Artist/Company: DEADLINE, Monday September 15
The Media submission form must be completed for EACH Artist/Company presented. (If you are registering multiple artist/companies you must register the first artist, click “submit,” re-enter this site, register the next artist, click “submit,” etc.)

2) Collect Media
NPN/VAN Partners: Media must be submitted in single digital video format. NPN will accept .mov, .mpg and .mp4 files. All videos must be the exact 4 minutes (or less) of media NPN/VAN Partners would like to present. NPN staff will not cue media, or accept other formats such as photo slideshows and power-point presentations. Total running time cannot exceed 4 minutes!

2) Submit Media: DEADLINE, Wednesday October 1
NPN Partners presenting multiple artists should compile excerpts of artists into a single 4-minute video file, using the formats listed above. Video files should be sent electronically to NPN Program Associate William Bowling via Dropbox or other File Sharing service, or uploaded to a Vimeo account with accessible downloads. Mailed media will not be returned. All media should be previewed before sent and/or packaged safely for shipping.

VAN Partners: The national office recognizes that presenting media on visual artists often requires presenting still images as opposed to video. VAN Partners are welcome to submit media in a Microsoft PowerPoint format. VAN staff will combine all PPT presentations and allow for 4 minutes of presentation for each VAN Partner.

All media must be REGISTERED HERE by Monday September 15 and received by the NPN office no later than Wednesday October 1MEDIA RECEIVED AFTER THIS DATE WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED. Please remember that there are a limited number of slots for the Slam, so NPN/VAN presenters will be accepted on a first come, first served basis by region. Staff will NOT accept “walk up media” during the annual meeting.
