What NPN has Meant to the South Dallas Cultural Center

When the South Dallas Cultural Center (SDCC) was invited to join National Performance Network (NPN) in 2004, I was thrilled! I was very familiar with NPN’s work and felt honored to have SDCC join. The Network’s commitment to funding new work helps SDCC fulfill its goal to commission the work of local artists of African descent. Without this critical funding, we could not sustain our Diaspora Performing Art Commissioning Project that has allowed us to commission numerous theater, dance and music works by Dallas area artists. In addition, our partnership with Teatro Dallas to present the only on-going international theater festival in North Texas would not be possible without NPN support. Fabulous artists like the late Jennylin Duany and Teo Castellanos graced Teatro’s stage because we received NPN funds.

As a board member, I am personally committed to NPN insuring that it remains strong and productive. There is no other organization in this country that provides this kind of support for emerging and mid-career artists presenting challenging and provocative work. I am very proud that the South Dallas Cultural Center is hosting the 25th Anniversary NPN Annual Meeting because I know Dallas will love NPN as much as I do!
