Production Manager

The Skirball Cultural Center seeks an experienced, detail-oriented, conscientious Production Manager. This position is accountable for the professional presentation of a wide variety of programs and events, including concerts, films, lectures, performances, conferences, meetings, and social gatherings. The Production Manager reports to the Vice President and Director of Programs. This position is full time with benefits.


The Production Manager coordinates with Skirball departments and outside contractors on the production of public events and supervises activities during the actual performance. In cooperation with the Programs and Hospitality/Private Events departments as well as porters, AV, security, facilities, and catering staff, the Production Manager will:

  • Review and evaluate tech riders and artist/speaker technical needs; assess technical production needs.
  • Create facilities usage plan for events.
  • Propose production budget for approval.
  • Create stage and event set-ups per artist specifications, Skirball capabilities, and approved production budget.
  • Design, assist in design of, or approve lighting, sound, and house configuration plans as appropriate.
  • Select and order production rentals (stage, lights, backline, sound equipment, etc.).
  • Hire and supervise technical and production staff as needed.
  • Coordinate performer rehearsal times/facilities to ensure on-time start.
  • Solicit bids from vendors and monitor contracts and invoices.
  • Work closely with AV staff to ensure facility equipment such as speakers, amplifiers, mixing board, etc., are well-maintained; may participate with AV and Operations staff in reviews and assessments of existing and future equipment purchases.
  • Set up and operate technical equipment, or coordinate set-up and operation with existing Skirball staff, based on agreed upon plan.
  • Supervise load in, tech, rehearsals, programs, and strike.
  • Serve as stage manager and house manager as appropriate.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve problems as needed.
  • Accountable for the production of events within the approved production budget. Report regularly on expenses; review procedures, systems, and plans and implement changes as needed to reduce expenses or increase income.


  • Experience as a working professional with broad expertise in production and technical theater
  • Working knowledge of production scheduling, lighting, sound, staging, rigging, and design elements
  • A working knowledge of producing programs for a cultural organization, with emphasis on music, performing arts, literary programs, lectures, film, multi-media, festivals, and exhibitions
  • Demonstrated success producing effective programs, preferably for non-traditional spaces
  • Very effective oral and listening communications skills and the ability to work effectively with people of diverse cultures, ages, and economic backgrounds
  • Negotiation skills
  • Supervisory and leadership skills to supervise a small staff plus provide leadership to major projects requiring large numbers. Ability to build teams and collaborate with others on major projects.
  • Ability to juggle multiple priorities and conflicting deadlines in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment
  • Personal computer skills; proficiency utilizing Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, multi-media programs
  • Basic accounting skills to develop and manage budgets
  • Current and valid driver’s license and proof of insurance if using vehicle while traveling on business
  • Active listening and strong interpersonal skills with the ability to develop productive relationships across the organization and across the field
  • A sense of entrepreneurship, high standards, self-motivation, flexibility, ingenuity, dedication, enthusiasm, and high energy
  • A keen appreciation and understanding of the Skirball Cultural Center mission and philosophy
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends

Typically, these skills and knowledge are the result of a degree in film, theater, media, event production, or related discipline and/or several years of increasingly responsible professional and supervisory experience in similar production jobs.
