“…embraced with amazing hospitality”

Jan Sebon and his Miami-based company, Kazak International, traveled to Haiti last summer to work with children who had lost both their parents in last year’s devastating earthquake. Sharing living quarters in the orphanage, Kazak learned Haitian Roots music and new drumming techniques from Haitian musicians, while teaching the children traditional African songs and dances and modern American step dance. Read more about this Creative Exchange supported by NPN’s Performing Americas Program, with a grant from the Robert Sterling Clark Foundation and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

Creation Fund Artists on View Now

OntheBoards.tv, a new project of NPN Partner in Seattle, On the Boards, has launched several new films, including two Creation Fund grantees. Watch Dayna Hanson’s Gloria’s Cause (profiled in last month’s e-news) or Pat Graney Company’s Faith Tryptich. Visit OntheBoards.tv to see an ever-growing collection of live performance. Short excerpts are free; viewers can rent or purchase films of full-length work, creating new revenue streams for artists and presenters alike.

Visual Artists Network Publishes New Catalog

The Visual Artists Network (VAN), NPN’s latest venture, connects 15 visual art spaces across the country. In the 2010 residency season, VAN Partners provided exhibition and community engagement opportunities to a diverse array of 22 visual artists. The latest catalog includes vivid full-color images from the year’s activity, artist interviews, plus an essay by ARTPAPERS Editor Sylvie Fortin. Visit www.npnweb.org/resources to download a free copy or purchase a printed bound copy on amazon.com.

The VAN catalog is supported in part by a grant from the Joan Mitchell Foundation.

“Doing it on the Road” — 2011 Workshops across the Country

Are you a performing artist who wants to expand your range, or just need to hone your touring skills? Maybe you’d like to network with presenters in your region or spend time with the knowledgeable NPN staff? NPN is partnering with the Network of Ensemble Theatre (NET) to present a full-day professional development touring workshop in Minneapolis, MN on May 13, and is presenting its 2-hour version of “Doing it on the Road” in Tampa, FL on May 19. Space is limited for both workshops. To register for the NET/NPN touring workshop — there is a nominal sliding scale fee — contact Mark Valdez (markevaldez@yahoo.com). The Tampa “Doing it on the Road” is free; RSVP to Jeanne Piazza (Jeanne.Piazza@strazcenter.org).

Creative Capital Offers Grants to Subsidize Workshops

CC’s Professional Development Program helps artists manage the business side of their art with greater efficiency and results. Organizations can apply for grants to offer these workshops to artists for a significantly reduced fee. The deadline for applicants wishing to host a 2011 workshop is 5:30pm EST, June 17, 2011.
