Summer Community Fund Awards

In July 2010 NPN awarded $22,116 to six organizations to extend the reach and scope of artist engagement in their communities. Read more…
Receiving awards are:

  • Alverno Presents in Milwaukee, to extend the residency of Heidi Latsky Dance Company by working with local dancers to perform a prologue for The Gimp Project.
  • Center for Community Arts Partnerships, Columbia College Chicago, to enable M.U.G.A.B.E.E. to work with community youth and adults in Englewood public schools through workshops and performances.
  • DiverseWorks, to expand Universes’ residency through collaborative writing workshops with Houston mentors, high school students, and Latino students at MECA.
  • Tigertail Productions in Miami, to broaden opportunities for writing, performance and career development for inner city teens and young adults through workshops focusing on art and activism around environmental catastrophe.
  • Links Hall in Chicago, to allow Aiken/Hauser to work for four months with under-served high school visual arts students in improvisational dance.
  • Performance Space 122 in New York City, to further a professional mentorship between Tim Miller and three young queer performing artists who are part of East Village Queer Community Outreach.

Connecting the Local to the Global — A Conversation in Honor of NPN’s Anniversary

As part of its 25th Anniversary, NPN initiated three dialogues between long-time NPN colleagues, and then commissioned writers to distill these conversations into stories for the Directory/Annual Report to be published in December. Ed Noonan and Arnie Malina, the current and previous directors of the Myrna Loy Center in Helena, chatted about the impact of NPN on the local community.

Philly Hosts Creative Exchange for Asian American Performance Artists

Asian Arts Initiative in Philadelphia received a Community Fund earlier this year to bring together some of the field’s “all-stars” for a weekend of creative exchange and ensemble art-making. Read more…

NPN Hires New Staff

NPN is pleased to announce that Jenny Howell has been hired as Program Assistant for Convenings. Originally from the Mississippi coast, Jenny has been a New Orleans resident for over two years. In December, she will graduate from the University of New Orleans with an MA in Arts Administration. As part of her program, she did an internship at NPN Partner Dance Theater Workshop in New York City, and thus comes well-prepared to join the NPN staff.

VAN Artist Captures National Notice

Visual Artist Manuel Acevedo was recently featured in The New York Times. Acevedo worked with the pilot phase of the Visual Artists Network, installing work with SPACES in Cleveland OH. He was also one of five artists who created a hotel room installation during the 2009 Annual Meeting in Knoxville. Read more…

Chamber Music America announces two grant deadlines:

October 15 for U.S. presenters that work with U.S. jazz ensembles in public performance.

October 22 for collaborations between U.S. and French jazz musicians and ensembles.
